Pacific Ocean Rowing Challenge (6) German rescued

Jim Shekhdar slaat om bij aankomst in Australie, na dezelfde oversteek in het zelfde type boot als de Pacific Ocean Rowing Challenge (273 dagen/ 2001). Op maandag 4 oktober zend National Geographic Channel een 60 minuten durende documentaire uit over de oversteek

Succes en teleurstelling op de Atlantische oceaan.

De Francaise Anne Quemere heeft op 30 augustus haar Atlantische roeioversteek volbracht van Cape Cod naar Frankrijk in 87 dagen en 12 uur. Hiermee is zij de derde persoon die tweemaal de Atlantische oceaan in beide richtingen heeft overgeroeid en de eerste vrouw

Vier september volgt waarschijnlijk Emanuel Coindre, die nu 53 dagen onderweg is en dan voor de vierde maal de Atlantische oceaan heeft overgestoken.

Emmanuel zal voorlopig de laatste roeier zijn die zich op een oceaan bevind, aangezien de duitser Andreas Rommel twee noodsignalen heeft uitgezonden via Epirb en Argos. Andreas is dus zeker in moeilijkheden geraakt, een reddingsactie is op gang gezet. De weerkaart laat zien dat er bij de positie van Andreas windkracht 7 heerst met golven van 8 meter.

July 16th 2004 20:30GMT left Chatham, Cape Cod, USA in a bid to row the North Atlantic solo West to East from USA to the UK and therefore become the first German in history to row an Ocean. EPIRB and Argos activated September 2nd!
Halifax RCC informed Andreas is safe onboard Federal Elba. Bulk carrier, under Cyprus flag, headed to Europe.

Helicopter is expected to be with Andreas in one hour.

Plane has spotted Andreas and a ship 60 miles away has been diverted and now progresses with ALL HASTE to the scene.

9.00 am

Coast Guard Officer Wendall Sprerry of RCC Halifax has informed ORS that they have recieved a signal from EPIRB of Andreas Romell. ORS has also been informed by CLS Argos that the Argos beacon on board the oceanrowboat of Andreas has been activated.

By prior arrangement with ORS when EPIRB and Argos are in emergency mode on oceanrowboat this is for sure a request for help, accordingly RCC Hailifax as of now will take the lead roll in deciding how to best meet the request from Andreas.

The Sardine has arrived

Anne Quemere arrive this morning at 5:15 a.m. local time. The whole team congratulates Anne for this wonderful performance.I rowed the last 36 miles like crazy, helped by a good NW wind that pushed me down to 45.58 N but mainly helped me to cross the 5.12 W, my finishing line, at 3:15 U.T. My joy is indescribable as, all exited, I admire the fireworks fired from the Noelie. I thought I would choke under the kisses as I wobbled aboard the Noelie, having lost the habit of standing up. This is not land yet. But I am home among my men who always helped me and watched me over for the past two days. Everything happens quickly and the boat is now in tow. It looks new to me though I have abused it for 3300 some miles. I admire the lines of the Sardine Connetable and I am proud to have taken it to the end of the road. The men appear exhausted by the sleepless nights; I do not look any better though they claim the contrary-very flattering! It is a fact that the present happiness erases all the bad times. Everything I have missed for so long is available: fresh fruits, yogurt, and sweet candy bars! I am trying not to stuff my face. It is probably no good to eat too much after being deprived for so long! At 9:30 a.m., Anne is manning the phone; her dynamic voice is full of joy. The day is going to be long, as she will need energy to answer all the questions and schedule interviews. But, for now, she is bursting with energy
